Terry Chipp
My ‘Box’ paintings create an illusion of reality with attention to detail and careful modelling of light and shade. The illusion is enhanced when the figures are painted life size and where simple trompe l’oeil, trick-of-the-eye, effects make them appear to break through the picture plane into the viewers’ space. Other parts of the picture are loosely painted to create a shadowy, uncertain setting. Where figures emerge from the shadows they are clearly, but only partially, represented suggesting that there may be more to them than meets the eye.
