Over the last year a group of Doncaster artists, including myself, have been working towards setting up a new art gallery for the town.\u00a0 Raising funds, gaining charitable status and drawing up the aims and workability of the project took several months but, with the support of the Doncaster town council, good progress has been made and the first exhibition has been hung.\u00a0 Unfortunately very few people have seen it as the November opening was postponed due to Covid restrictions but this has not stopped D-31 from operating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the delays D-31 has been busy with building an on-line presence and hosting virtual exhibitions, which have attracted entries from across the world.\u00a0 The driving force behind the project is Chinwe Ibe Russell.\u00a0 With a background in business (and a successful entry and sale at the RA Summer Show) she is rapidly building a reputation for the gallery before it has even opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The gallery is currently situated on the 1st\u00a0and 2nd\u00a0floors of a building just off the High Street with a 3rd\u00a0floor available for classes and workshops but there are plans to move later this year.\u00a0 A major re-arrangement of Doncaster\u2019s Cultural Quarter is relocating the museum, art gallery, library and archives into a new building close to the Cast theatre and new cinema complex around the Sir Nigel Gresley Square.\u00a0 The current library space, also in the square, has been offered to D-31 as a new home when Covid restrictions allow the moves to take place.\u00a0 If all goes to plan this could be a well positioned, very good space that may be of interest to LFA members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
