Pauline Meade\u2019s response to the Anthony Gross lithograph, \u201cHerne Bay Pier<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I finished this linoprint \u2018Day out in Whitby\u2019 in February 2020 from sketches made in normal times for the LFA exhibition to be held at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery inspired by works from the Leeds University Art collection postponed until now. I chose a lithograph by Anthony Gross showing people enjoying a day out on Herne Bay Pier in 1947, despite it clearly being a cold and windy day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u2019ve had some limits on our freedom after our year of \u2018lockdown\u2019 and much appreciate the current easing of restrictions, but it must have been really wonderful in post war Britain to be able to visit the seaside again. It appealed to me as the southeast coast including Herne Bay was the destination for holidays at that time for my family living in the London area. While living in the north of England, Whitby, Scarborough and Filey became favourite seaside places.
