Venustiano Carranza was one of the main leaders during the Mexican Civil War. He led the northern revolutionary Constitutional Army and, on defeating the counter revolutionary general Huerta in 1916, he served as head of state until his own assassination in 1920. During his administration the current constitution of Mexico was drafted and adopted.
