Concertina Sketchbook Covers
It’s been a challenge during lockdown not having access to all the usual inspirational sights and sounds but I have been lucky enough to get out pretty frequently into some big open spaces close to where I live. Strensall Common, near York has been a constant source of inspiration and it has been a joy to see it change from season to season – from huge red spotted toadstools in the woods to a thick blanket of snow on the common.
I have enjoyed making my own concertina sketchbooks to capture the atmosphere of some of my lockdown walks. I love the way they open out to give a sense of flow and continuity. Working from rough thumbnail sketches, imagination, photos and videos (some which I have made into Instagram Reels) I have abstracted/semi abstracted the landscape using acrylics alongside mixed media which has usually been in the form of oil pastel, charcoal, chalk pastel & Inktense pencils.
