Marcia Brown
My work is an expression of my identity, faith, and commitment to the ongoing journey of liberation and artistic self-discovery. It is primarily figurative, often incorporating images inspired by my Caribbean Heritage, music, portraits, symbolic representations, and Black icons. Narrative storytelling is a key component, allowing me to weave personal and collective histories into each piece.
I approach my creative process with a blend of traditional and digital techniques. I sometimes use photography, capturing images that serve as visual stimuli, followed by sketching and note-taking to refine my ideas. When called for I utilise digital tools and apps for image manipulation, though I prefer and cherish the tactile experience of working with traditional media like oil paints, graphite and pastels.
Through my art, I strive to create a visual dialogue that speaks to the experiences, struggles, and resilience of the Black diaspora and artistic/music community, while also celebrating the enduring connection between Africa and its descendants and people that make up the diverse community in Leeds.
