Peter Holt
Following studies at Liverpool College of Art I worked on commercial commissions in London as a freelance illustrator for advertising, publishing, editorial, and a range of other print media. Later, having returned northwards – and following post grad. studies at the University of Leeds, I have also taught art in the Yorkshire area. I now work exclusively on fine art practice; especially figure work, portraiture, and still life subjects. Portrait work is mainly in oil and largely representational, especially for formal portraits and commissioned work, although more creative interpretations and expressive elements can be incorporated. I do have a large drawing output which is largely confined to observational life studies; a regular practice since art college days. Still life work provides an opportunity to apply a freer and more experimental approach, sometimes leaning towards abstraction – an alternative to capturing likeness and character in a portrait, but also something which can complement and influence portraiture approach and handling.
‘Although themes are traditional, and Peter’s work is clearly representational, his approach often includes a bold use of media where subject and materials are combined in striking compositions’ (Living North Magazine 2019)
